14. Surah Ibrahim

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

اللّهِ الَّذِي لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ...

14: 2.     Of Allah, to Whom do belong all things in the heavens and on earth!

But alas for the Unbelievers for a terrible Penalty (their Unfaith will bring them)! --

C1872. See the last note.

That being the case, in what a sad plight are those who reject the Faith and Grace offered to them, and draw down on themselves all the terrible consequences of that rejection, -the Wrath to come!

14: 3.     Those who love the life of this world more than the Hereafter,

C1873. The Unbelievers are here characterized in three ways:

1.     they love this ephemeral life and its vanities more than the true Life which goes into the Hereafter;

2.     they not only harm themselves but mislead others,

3.     their own crooked minds search for something crooked in Allah's straight Path (Cf. 7:45).

But in doing so, they go farther and farther from the Truth.

who hinder (men) from the Path of Allah and seek therein something crooked:

they are astray by a long distance.

Pickthall’s Version:

14: 2

Pickthall Allah, unto Whom belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. And woe unto the disbelievers from an awful doom.

Transliteration Alla_hil lazi lahu_ ma_ fis sama_wa_ti wa ma_ fil ard(i), wa wailul lil ka_firina min 'aza_bin syadid(in),

14: 3

Pickthall Those who love the life of the world more than the Hereafter, and debar (men) from the way of Allah and would have it crooked: such are far astray.

Transliteration Allazina yastajibu_nal haya_tad dunya_ 'alala a_khirati wa yasuddu_na 'an sabililla_hi wa yabgu_naha_ 'iwaja_(n), ula_'ika fi dala_lim ba'id(in).

16.Sura al-Nahl

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

مَن كَفَرَ بِاللّهِ مِن بَعْدِ إيمَانِهِ ...

16: 106. Anyone who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters unbelief,

C2145. The exception refers to a case like that of 'Ammar, whose father Yasir and mother Sumayya, were subjected to unspeakable tortures for their belief in Islam, but never recanted. 'Ammar,

suffering under tortures himself and his mind acted on by the sufferings of his parents, uttered a word construed as recantation, though his heart never wavered and he came back at once to the Prophet, who consoled him for his pain and confirmed his faith. (R).

except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in faith,

but such as open their breast to unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah,

and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.

16: 107. This because they love the life of this world better than the Hereafter:

and Allah will not guide those who reject faith.

16: 108. Those are they whose hearts, ears, and eyes Allah has sealed up,

C2146. Cf. 2:7.

On account of their iniquities and their want of Faith their hearts and their senses become impervious to Allah's grace, and they run headlong to perdition.

and they take no heed.

16: 109. Without doubt, in the hereafter they will perish.

Pickthall’s Version:

16: 106

Pickthall Whoso disbelieveth in Allah after his belief save him who is forced thereto and whose heart is still content with Faith but whoso findeth ease in disbelief: On them is wrath from Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom.

Transliteration Man kafara billa_hi mim ba'di ima_nihi illa_ man ukriha wa qalbuhu_ mutma'innum bil ima_ni wala_kin man syaraha bil kufri sadran fa 'alaihim gadabum minalla_h(i), wa lahum 'aza_bun 'azim(un).

16: 107

Pickthall That is because they have chosen the life of the world rather than the Hereafter, and because Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk.

Transliteration Za_lika bi annahum-ustahabbul haya_tad dunya_ 'alal a_khirah(ti), wa annalla_ha la_ yahdil qaumal ka_firin(a).

16: 108

Pickthall Such are they whose hearts and ears and eyes Allah hath sealed. And such are the heedless.

Transliteration Ula_'ikal lazina taba'alla_hu 'ala_ qulu_bihim wa sam'ihim wa absa_rihim, wa ula_'ika humul ga_filu_n(a).

16: 109

Pickthall Assuredly in the Hereafter they are the losers.

Transliteration La_ jarama annahum fil a_khirati humul kha_siru_n(a).

20 Sura Taha

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرْتَنِي أَعْمَى وَقَدْ كُنتُ بَصِيرًا ﴿١٢٥﴾

20: 125. He will say: "O my Lord! why hast thou raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)?"

C2649. Because Allah gave him physical sight in this life for trial, he thinks he should be favoured in the real world, the world that matters! He misused his physical sight and made himself blind for the other world.

20: 126. (Allah) will say:

"Thus didst thou, when Our Signs came unto thee, disregard them:

so wilt thou, this day, be disregarded."

C2650. 'You were deliberately blind to Allah's Signs: now you will not see Allah's favours, and will be excluded from His Grace.

20: 127. And thus do We recompense him who transgresses beyond bounds and believes not in the Signs of his Lord:

and the Penalty of the Hereafter is far more grievous and more enduring.

C2651. Blindness in the world of enduring Reality is far worse than physical blindness in the world of probation.

20: 128. It is not a warning to such men (to call to mind) how many generations before them We destroyed,

in whose haunts they (now) move?

Verily, in this are Signs for men endued with understanding.

C2652. Cf. 20:54.

This phrase concluded the argument of Moses with Pharaoh about Pharaoh's blindness to Allah and the Signs of Allah.

Now it concludes the more general argument about men, concerning whom the saying arose: 'none are so blind as those who will not see.'

20:128

CAN, THEN, they [who reject the truth] learn no lesson by recalling how many a generation We have destroyed before their time? 1 " - [people] in whose dwelling-places they [themselves now] walk about? In this, behold, there are messages indeed for those who are endowed with reason!

Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning

Muhammad Asad

CAN, THEN, they [who reject the truth] learn no lesson by recalling how many a generation We have destroyed before their time? - [people] in whose dwelling-places they [themselves now] walk about? In this, behold, there are messages indeed for those who are endowed with reason!

&#x21E8

M. M. Pickthall

Is it not a guidance for them (to know) how many a generation We destroyed before them, amid whose dwellings they walk? Lo! therein verily are signs for men of thought.

&#x21E8

Shakir

Does it not then direct them aright how many of the generations In whose dwelling-places they go about We destroyed before them? Most surely there are signs in this for those endowed with understanding.

&#x21E8

Yusuf Ali

Is it not a warning to such men (to call to mind) how many generations before them We destroyed, in whose haunts they (now) move? Verily, in this are Signs for men endued with understanding.

Do they not learn a lesson from Our destruction of many generations before them in whose dwelling-places they walk about? Surely in this are signs for men of understanding.

&#x21E8

[Al-Muntakhab]

Do they not perceive O Muhammad mentally and by sight the significance of Allah's penalties! and have they failed to realize how many generations before them did We reduce to a useless form? They tread their dwellings they once occupied and they see with their own eyes the consequence of disobeying Allah. Indeed such outcome is emblematic of Allah's signs recognized by people of insight.

&#x21E8

[Progressive Muslims]

Is it not a guide to them how many generations We had destroyed before them, which they are walking now in their homes In that are signs for the people of understanding.
