10. Surah Yunus

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

أَلا إِنَّ لِلّهِ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَات وَمَن فِي الأَرْضِ...

10: 66.  Behold!

verily to Allah belong all creatures, in the heavens and on earth.

What do they follow who worship as His "partners" other than Allah?

They follow nothing but fancy, and they do nothing but lie.

C1453. All creatures are subject to Allah. If, therefore, any false worship is set up, the false gods-so called "partners" are merely creatures of imagination or false inventions.

Others version:

10: 66

Pickthall Lo! is it not unto Allah that belongeth whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth? Those who follow aught instead of Allah follow not (His) partners. They follow only a conjecture, and they do but guess.

Yuksel Certainly, to God belongs all who are in the heavens and those who are on earth. As for those who call on partners besides God, they only follow conjecture, and they only guess.

23. Surah muminun

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version

23:90. We have sent them the Truth: but they indeed practice Falsehood!

23:91. No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him:

(if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what be had created, and some would have lorded it over others!

C2931. Cf. 17:42.

The multiplicity of gods is intellectually indefensible, considering the unity of Design and Purpose in His wonderful Universe.

23: 92. He knows what is hidden and what is open:

too high is He for the partners they attribute to Him!

C2932. To suppose that Allah has a son or family or partners or companions is to have a low idea of Allah, Who is high above all such relationships.

He is the One True God, and there can be none to compare with Him.

10: 28

Yusuf Ali One Day shall We gather them all together. Then shall We say to those who joined gods (with Us): "To your place! ye and those ye joined as `partners.'" We shall separate them and their "partners" shall say: "It was not us that ye worshipped!"

Pickthall On the day when We gather them all together, then We say unto those who ascribed partners (unto Us): Stand back, ye and your (pretended) partners (of Allah)! And We separate them, the one from the other, and their (pretended) partners say: It was not us ye worshipped.

10: 29

Yusuf Ali "Enough is Allah for a witness between us and you: we certainly knew nothing of your worship of us!

Pickthall Allah sufficeth as a witness between us and you, that we were unaware of your worship.

Transliteration Fakafa_ billa_hi syahidam bainana_ wa bainakum in kunna_ 'an 'iba_datikum laga_filin(a).

10:30

Yusuf Ali There will every soul prove (the fruits of) the deeds it sent before: they will be brought back to Allah their rightful Lord and their invented falsehoods will leave them in the lurch.

Pickthall There doth every soul experience that which it did aforetime, and they are returned unto Allah, their rightful Lord, and that which they used to invent hath failed them.

Transliteration Huna_lika tablu_ kullu nafsin ma_ aslafat wa ruddu_ ilalla_hi maula_humul haqqi wa dalla 'anhum ma_ ka_nu_ yaftaru_n(a).

[[ Asad’s notes - [see asad note 45……….a metonymical phrase denoting a realization on the part of former that there has never been any existential link between them and those false objects of worship: cf. 6:24, 10:30, 11:21, 16: 87, and 28:75]

[note 46: …..it was only your own fancies and desires that you worshipped, clothing them in the garb of extraneous beings”: in other words, the worship of idols, forces of nature, saints, prophets, angels, etc……..is shown here to be nothing but a projection of the worshipper’s own subconscious desires. Cf. also 34:41.and note 52]]
