2: 38

Asad [For although] We did say “Down with you all from this [state], “ there shall, none the less, most certainly come unto you guidance from Me: and those who follow My guidance need have no fear, and neither shall they grieve;

Yusuf Ali We said: "Get ye down all from here; and if as is sure there comes to you guidance from Me" whosoever follows My guidance on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

Pickthall We said: Go down, all of you, from hence; but verily there cometh unto you from Me a guidance; and whoso followeth My guidance, there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

2: 274

Asad Those who spend their possessions (for the sake of God) by night and by day, secretly and openly, shall have their reward with their Sustainer ; and no fear need they have , and neither shall they grieve.

Yusuf Ali Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day in secret and in public have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

Pickthall Those who spend their wealth by night and day, by stealth and openly, verily their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

3: 170

Yusuf Ali They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah: and with regard to those left behind who have not yet joined them (in their bliss) the (martyrs) glory in the fact that on them is no fear nor have they (cause to) grieve.

Pickthall Jubilant (are they) because of that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty, rejoicing for the sake of those who have not joined them but are left behind: that there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

Transliteration Farihin bima_ a_ta_humulla_hu min fadlih(i), wa yastabsyiru_na billazina lam yalhaqu_ bihim min khalfihim, alla_ khaufun'alaihim wa la_ hum yahzanu_n(a).

[[ Ali’s notes - 478 The Martyrs not only rejoice at the bliss they have themselves attained. The dear ones left behind are in their thoughts: it is part of their glory that they have saved their dear ones from fear, sorrow, humiliation, and grief, in this life, even before they come to share in the glories of the Hereafter. Note how the refrain: "on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve": comes in here with a new and appropriate meaning. Besides other things, it means that the dear ones have no cause to grieve at the death of the Martyrs; rather have they cause to rejoice. (3.170) ]]

4: 39 [an-Nisa, Medina 92]

Asad And what would they have to fear if they would but believe in God and the Last Day, and spend [in His way] out of what God has granted them as sustenance – since God has indeed full knowledge of them?

Yusuf Ali And what burden were it on them if they had faith in Allah and in the Last Day and they spent out of what Allah hath given them for sustenance? For Allah hath full Knowledge of them.

Pickthall What have they (to fear) if they believe in Allah and the Last Day and spend (aright) of that which Allah hath bestowed upon them, when Allah is ever Aware of them ( and all they do)?

Transliteration Wa ma_za_ 'alaihim lau a_manu_ billa_hi wal yaumil a_khiri wa anfaqu_ mimma_ razaqahumulla_h(u), wa ka_nalla_hu bihim 'alima_(n).

4: 40

Asad Verily, God does not wrong [anyone] by as much as an atom’s weight; and if there be a good deed, he will multiply it, and will bestow out of His grace a mighty reward.

Yusuf Ali Allah is never unjust in the least degree: if there is any good (done) He double it and give from His own presence a great reward.

Pickthall Lo! Allah wrong not even of the weight of an ant; and if there is a good deed, He will double it and will give (the doer) from His presence an immense reward.

Transliteration Innalla_ha la_ yazlimu misqa_la zarrah(tin), wa in taku hasanatay yuda_'ifha_ wa yu'ti mil ladunhu ajran 'azima_(n).

[ Ruby’s note – God’s full knowledge is mentioned here to stress the fact that all our actions and thinking are being properly considered and weighed for our results, therefore human beings do not need to fear if they basically do right things – among them charity is paramount-- and believe in God and the Hereafter.]

[[ Asad’s note 50 – Lit., “what is it that would be upon them”. This seems to be a reference to the oft-repeated Quranic statement that those who believe in God and live righteously “need have no fear” (la khawf alayhim – lit., “no fear [shall be] upon them”). ]]

[[ Ali’s notes - 558 Sustenance: physical, intellectual, spiritual-everything pertaining to life and growth. Our being is from Allah, and we must therefore spend ourselves freely for Allah. How can it be a burden? It is merely a response to the demand of our own healthy nature. (4.39)

559 Any little good of our own comes from the purity of our heart. Its results in the world are doubled and multiplied by Allah's grace and mercy; but an even greater reward comes from Him: His good pleasure, which brings us nearer to Him. (4.40) ]]

7: 35 [al-Araf, Mecca 39]

Asad O children of Adam! Whenever there come unto you apostles of your own, conveying My messages unto you, then all who are conscious of Me and live righteously – no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve;

Yusuf Ali O ye children of Adam! whenever there come to you apostles from amongst you rehearsing my signs unto you those who are righteous and mend (their lives) on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

Pickthall O Children of Adam! If messengers of your own come unto you who narrate unto you My revelations, then whosoever refrain from evil and amend there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

Transliteration Ya_ bani a_dama imma_ ya'tiyannakum rusulum minkum yaqussu_na 'alaikum a_ya_ti, famanittaqa_ wa aslaha fala_ khaufun 'alaihim wa la_ hum yahzanu_n(a).

10: 62

Asad Oh, verily, they who are close to God – no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve:

Yusuf Ali Behold! verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear nor shall they grieve;

Pickthall Lo! verily the friends of Allah are (those) on whom fear (cometh) not, nor do they grieve.

Transliteration Ala_ inna auliya_'alla_hi la_ khaufun 'alaihim wa la_ hum yahzanu_n(a).

10: 63

Asad They who have attained to faith and have always been conscious of Him.

Yusuf Ali Those who believe and (constantly) guard against evil

Pickthall Those who believe and keep their duty (to Allah),

Transliteration Allazina a_manu_ wa ka_nu_ yattaqu_n(a).

10: 64

Asad For them there is the glad tiding in the life of this world and in the life to come; nothing could ever alter God’s promise, this, this is the triumph supreme!

Yusuf Ali For them are Glad Tidings in the life of the Present and in the Hereafter: no change can there be in the Words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme Felicity.

Pickthall Theirs are good tidings in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing the Words of Allah that is the Supreme Triumph.

Transliteration Lahumul busyra_ fil haya_tid dunya_ wa fil a_khirah(ti), la_ tabdila li kalima_tilla_h(i), za_lika huwal fauzul 'azim(u).

10: 65

Yusuf Ali Let not their speech grieve thee: for all power and honor belong to Allah: it is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).

Pickthall And let not their speech grieve thee (O Muhammad). Lo! power belongeth wholly to Allah. He is the Hearer, the Knower.

Transliteration Wa la_ yahzunka qauluhum, innal 'izzata lilla_hi jami'a_(n), huwas sami'ul 'alim(u).

9: 57

Asad If they could but find a place of refuge, or any cavern, or a crevice [in the earth], they would turn towards it in headlong haste [note80].

Yusuf Ali If they could find a place to flee to or caves or a place of concealment they would turn straightway thereto with an obstinate rush.

Pickthall Had they but found a refuge, or caverns, or a place to enter, they surely had resorted thither swift as runaways.

Transliteration Lau uajidu_na malja'an au maga_ra_tin au muddakhalal lawallau ilaihi wa hum yajmahu_n(a).

[[ Asad’s note 80 – Thus the Quran shows that the innermost cause of all hypocrisy is fear – fear of a moral commitment and, at the same time, fear of an open breach with one’s social environment. In their overriding, immoral desire for social conformity, “the hypocrites seek to deceive God – the while it is He who causes them to be deceived [by themselves]”……………]]

[[ Ruby’s note – And this fear exists among people who do not have faith and trust in God. They rely on human ability and factors but those are weak. Therefore they become obsessed with fear and take stands that are to protect them but in reality those are detrimental to them. On the other hand those who trust God and continue doing good work in spite of the adverse situation or confronting the situation instead of complying with its wrong demands at times find themselves relatively fearless and upright. In the long run these are the people who succeed. There generally is prevalent misconception between fear and due concern. The former is destructive and the later is constructive. One can take due measures anticipating some possible negative outcome but if one is struck by fear and paranoia it is likely the actions that would emerge as a result would be detrimental and counter-productive at least. This concept in very broad term. In reality fear cannot be totally eliminated but it can be well-managed with conviction and trust in God even in the worst of the situation such as wars and crisis.]
