Repentance, Correction & Expiation

2: 159

Asad Behold, as for those who suppress aught of the evidence of the truth and of the guidance which We have bestowed from on high, after We have made it clear unto mankind through the divine writ – these it is whom God will reject, and whom all who can judge will reject. [note 129 ]

Yusuf Ali Those who conceal the clear (Signs) We have sent down and the guidance after We have made it clear for the people in the book on them shall be Allah's curse and the curse of those entitled to curse.

Pickthall Those who hide the proofs and the guidance which We revealed, after We had made it clear in the Scripture: such are accursed of Allah and accursed of those who have the power to curse.

2: 160

Asad Excepted, however, shall be they that repent, and put themselves to rights, and make known the truth: and it is they whose repentance I shall accept – for I alone am the Acceptor of REPENTANCE, the Dispenser of Grace.

Yusuf Ali Except those who repent and make amends and openly declare (the truth) to them I turn; for I am Oft-Returning Most Merciful.

Pickthall Except such of them as repent and amend and make manifest (the truth). These it is toward whom I relent. I am the Relenting, the Merciful.

Transliteration Illal lazina ta_bu_ wa aslahu_ wa bayyanu_ fa ula_'ika atu_bu'alaihim, wa anat tawwa_bur rahim(u).

3: 133 - 135 And vie with one another to attain to your Sustainer's forgiveness and to a paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, which has been readied for the God-conscious who spend ……doers of good; and who when they have committed a shameful deed or have (otherwise) sinned against themselves, remember God and pray that their sins be forgiven - for who but God could forgive sins? And do not knowingly persist in doing whatever (wrong) they may have done.

3: 133

Yusuf Ali Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord and for a garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth prepared for the righteous.

Pickthall And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil);

Yusuf Ali Those who spend (freely) whether in prosperity or in adversity; who restrain anger and pardon (all) men; for Allah loves those who do good.

Pickthall Those who spend (of that which Allah hath given them) in ease and in adversity, those who control their wrath and are forgiving toward mankind; Allah loveth the good;

3: 135

Yusuf Ali And those who having done something to be ashamed of or wronged their own souls earnestly bring Allah to mind and ask for forgiveness for their sins and who can forgive sins except Allah? And are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.

Pickthall And those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves, remember Allah and implore forgiveness for their sins--Who forgiveth sins save Allah only?--and will not knowingly repeat (the wrong) they did.

3: 136

Yusuf Ali For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens with rivers flowing underneath an eternal dwelling; how excellent a recompense for those who work (and strive)!

Pickthall The reward of such will be forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever, a bountiful reward for workers!

4: 64 ……If then, after having sinned against themselves, they would but come round to thee and ask God to forgive them….they would assuredly find that God is an acceptor of repentance, and dispenser of grace.

4: 15 And as for those of your women who become guilty of immoral conduct, call upon four from among you who have witnessed their guilt; and if these bear witness thereto, confine the guilty women to their houses until death takes them away or God opens for them a way [through repentance] .

4: 16 And punish both of the guilty parties; but if they both repent and mend their ways, leave them alone; for , behold, God is an acceptor of repentance, a dispenser

of grace.

4:17 Verily, god's acceptance of repentance relates only to those who do evil out of ignorance and then repent before their time runs out: and it is they unto whom God will turn again in His mercy -for God is all-Knowing, wise.

4: 18 whereas repentance shall not be accepted from those who do evil deeds until their dying hour and then say, " Behold, I now repent" ; nor from those who die as deniers of the truth: it is these for whom We have readied grievous suffering.

4: 109

Yusuf Ali Ah! these are the sort of men on whose behalf ye may contend in this world; but who will contend with Allah on their behalf on the Day of Judgment or who will carry their affairs through?

Pickthall Lo! ye are they who pleaded for them in the life of the world. But who will plead with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will then be their defender?

4: 110

Asad Yet he who does evil or [otherwise] sins against himself, and thereafter prays God to forgive him, shall find God much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace:

Yusuf Ali If anyone does evil or wrongs his own soul but afterwards seeks Allah's forgiveness he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Pickthall Yet whoso doeth evil or wrongeth his own soul, then seeketh pardon of Allah, will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.

4: 111

Asad for he who commits a sin, commits it only to his own hurt [note 137]: and God is indeed all-knowing, wise.

Yusuf Ali And if anyone earns sin he earns it against his own soul: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.

Pickthall Whoso committeth sin committeth it only against himself. Allah is ever Knower, Wise.

[[ Asad’s note 137 – Lit., “he who earns a sin, earns it only against himself”. ]]

[[ Ali’s note - 624 Kasaba = to earn, to gain, to work for something valuable, to lay up a provision for the future life. We do a day's labor to earn our livelihood: so in a spiritual sense, whatever good or evil we do in this life, earns us good or evil in the life to come. In verses 110-112 three cases are considered: (1) if we do ill and repent, Allah will forgive; (2) if we do ill and do not repent: thinking that we can hide it, we are wrong; nothing is hidden from Allah, and we shall suffer the full consequences in the life to come, for we can never evade our personal responsibility: (3) if we do ill, great or small, and impute it to another, our original responsibility for the ill remains, but we add to it something else; for we tie round our necks the guilt of falsehood, which converts even our minor fault into a great sin, and in any case brands us even in this life with shame and ignominy. (4.111) ]]

4: 112

Yusuf Ali But if anyone earns a fault or a sin and throws it on to one that is innocent He carries (on himself) (both) a falsehood and a flagrant sin.

Pickthall And whoso commit a delinquency or crime, then throws (the blame) thereof upon the innocent, hath burdened himself with falsehood and a flagrant crime.

4: 16

Asad And punish both of the guilty parties [note 13] but if they both repent and mend their ways, leave them alone; for, behold, God is an acceptor of repentance, a dispenser of grace [note 14].

Yusuf Ali If two men among you are guilty of lewdness punish them both. If they repent and amend leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning Most Merciful.

Pickthall And as for the two of you who are guilty thereof, punish them both. And if they repent and improve, then let them be. Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful.

4: 17

Yusuf Ali Allah accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent soon afterwards; to them will Allah turn in mercy; for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.

Pickthall Forgiveness is only incumbent on Allah toward those who do evil in ignorance (and) then turn quickly (in repentance) to Allah. These are they toward whom Allah relenteth. Allah is ever Knower, Wise.

It means giving up disease for health, crookedness (which is abnormal) for the Straight Way, the restoration of our nature as Allah created it from the falsity introduced by the enticements of Evil. To revert to the simile of the magnetic needle (n. 3540 above), if the needle is held back by obstructions, we must restore its freedom, so that it points true again to the magnetic pole.
