36. Surah Ya Sin (O Thou Human Being) Mecca 41

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

36: 71.  See they not that it is We Who have created for them -- among the things which Our hands have fashioned --

cattle, which are under their dominion? --

C4018. If they are blind to other Signs of Allah, they can at least see the simple homely things of life in which they receive so many benefits from Allah's mercy. How is it that wild animals can be domesticated, and in domestication can be so useful to man?

Man can use them for riding or for drought; he can use their flesh for food and drink their milk; he can use their hair or wool.

Cf. 16:66,80: and 23:21-22.

36: 72.  And that We have subjected them to their (use)?

Of them some do carry them and some they eat:

36: 73.  And they have (other) profits from them (besides), and they get (milk) to drink.

C4019. Such as skins for leather, furs for warmth, sheep's wool or camel's hair for blankets or textiles, musk for perfume, and so on.

Will they not then be grateful?

C4020. The whole argument turns on this. 'Our teaching is for your own benefit. We confer all these blessings on you, and yet ye turn away from the Giver of all, and run after your own vain imaginations!

Asad’s Version:

36:71 Are they, then, not aware that it is for them that We have created, among all the things which Our hands have wrought," the domestic animals of which they are [now] masters? –

(36:72) and that We have subjected them to men's will, 42 so that some of them they may use for riding and of some they may eat,

(36:73) and may have [yet other] benefits from them, and [milk] to drink? Will they not, then, be grateful?

43. Surah Zukhruf(Gold)

Mecca 63 [89 verses]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

43: 12. That has created pairs in all things,

C4616. Cf. n. 2578 to 20:53. Also see 36:36, n. 3981.

and has made for you ships and cattle on which ye ride,

C4617. By analogy all means of transport, including horses, camels, ships, steamers, railways, aeroplanes, airships, etc.

The domestication of animals as well as the invention of mechanical means of transport require a skill and ingenuity in man, which are referred to Allah as His gifts or endowments to man.

43: 13. In order that ye may sit firm and square on their backs, and when so seated, ye may celebrate the (kind) favor of your Lord, and say,

C4618. See last note.

People of understanding attribute all good to its true and original source viz.: Allah.

"Glory to Him Who has subjected these to Our (use), for We could never have accomplished this (by ourselves).

Asad’s Version:

(43: 12) And He it is who has created all opposites. 10 And He [it is who] has provided for you all those ships and animals whereon you ride,

(43:13) in order that you might gain mastery over them," and that, whenever you have mastered them, you might remember your Sustainer's blessings and say: "Limitless in His glory is He who has made [all] this subservient to our use - since [but for Him,] we would not have been able to attain to it. (43: 14) Hence, verily, it is unto Him that we must always turn."
