8. [al-anfal, Medina 88, after Badr 2H]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



وَمَا كَانَ صَلاَتُهُمْ عِندَ الْبَيْتِ إِلاَّ مُكَاء وَتَصْدِيَةً...   

8: 35.  Their prayer at the house (of Allah) is nothing but whistling and clapping of hands:

...فَذُوقُواْ الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ ﴿٣٥﴾

(its only answer can be), "Taste ye the penalty because ye blasphemed."


Other Versions:

8: 35

Asad and their prayers before the Temple are nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. [note 35] Taste then, [O unbelievers,] this chastisement as an outcome of your persistent denial of the truth [note36]!

Pickthall And their worship at the (holy) House is naught but whistling and hand clapping. Therefore (it is said unto them): Taste of the doom because ye disbelieve.

Transliteration Wa ma_ ka_na sala_tuhum 'indal baiti illa_ muka_'aw wa tasdiyah(tan), fa zu_qul 'aza_ba bima_ kuntum takfuru_n(a).
