3. Sura al-Imran

Medina 89 [200 verses]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

رَبَّنَا لاَ تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً...

3: 8. "Our Lord!" (they say),

"Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence;

for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure."

3: 9. "Our Lord!

Thou art He that will gather mankind together against a day about which there is no doubt:

for Allah never fails in His promise."

C349. This is the prayer of those who are firmly grounded in knowledge. The more they know the more they realise how little they know.

But they have Faith. The glimpses they get of Truth they wish to hold fast in their hearts, and they pray to Allah to preserve them from deviating even from what light they have got.

They are sure of their eventual return to Allah, when all doubts will be solved.

Pickthall’s Version:

3: 8

Pickthall Our Lord! Cause not our hearts to stray after Thou hast guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Thy Presence. Lo! Thou, only Thou art the Bestower.

Transliteration Rabbana_ la_ tuzig qulu_bana_ ba'da iz hadaitana_ wa hab lana_ mil ladunka rahmah(tan), innaka antal wahha_b(u).

3: 9

Pickthall Our Lord! it is Thou Who gatherest mankind together to a Day of which there is no doubt. Lo! Allah faileth not to keep the tryst.

Transliteration Rabbana_ innaka ja_mi'un na_si li yaumil la_ raiba fih(i), innalla_ha la_ yukhliful mi'a_d(a).

10. Surah Yunus, Mecca 51

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَمَا ظَنُّ الَّذِينَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللّهِ الْكَذِبَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ...

10: 60.  And what think those who invent lies against Allah, of the Day of Judgment?

C1448. People who lie in Religion or invent false gods, or false worship,-have they any idea of the Day of Judgment, when they will be called to account, and will have to answer for their deeds?

Verily Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.

C1449. Allah is most kind, and gracious, and generous with His gifts of all kinds, material and spiritual. But men do not understand, and are ungrateful in forgetting the Giver of all and setting up false objects of worship and false standards of pride.

Pickthall’s Version:

10: 60

Pickthall And what think those who invent a lie concerning Allah (will be their plight) upon the Day of Resurrection? Lo! Allah truly is Bountiful toward mankind, but most of them give not thanks.

Transliteration Wa ma_ zannul lazina yaftaru_na 'alalla_hil kaziba yaumal qiya_mah(ti), innalla_ha lazu_ fadlin 'alan na_si wa la_kinna aksarahum la_ yasykuru_n(a).

12. Surah Yusuf (Joseph)

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَاتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ آبَآئِـي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ...

12: 38.  "And I follow the ways of my fathers -- Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob;

C1691. Again the same note of personal modesty.

'You may think I am as young as you, or younger. Yes, but I have the heritage of great men renowned for wisdom and truth, such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Surely what they knew is worthy of respect. Never did they swerve a hair's breadth from the Gospel of Unity.

It is not that we boast. It was Allah's grace that taught us and Allah's grace is teaching all mankind. But men show their ingratitude by inventing other so-called gods'.

and never could we attribute any partners whatever to Allah:

that (comes) of the grace of Allah to us and to mankind:

yet most men are not grateful.

Other Versions:

12: 38

Pickthall And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. It never was for us to attribute aught as partner to Allah. This is of the bounty of Allah unto us (the seed of Abraham) and unto mankind; but most men give not thanks.

Yuksel "I followed the creed of my fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It was not for us to set up partners with God at all. That is God's blessings over us and over the people, but most of the people are not thankful."
