17. Surah Al Isra

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَرَبُّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ...

17: 55.  And it is your Lord that knoweth best all beings that are in the heavens and on earth:

C2240. Not only are we not to judge other ordinary men and carp at them. We are not to set up false standards for judging the Prophets of Allah.

If one was born of the unlearned Arab race, he yet was a mercy to all the worlds.

If one spoke to Allah as Kalim Allah or another's life Ruh Allah began with a miracle; it does not imply superiority. It only means that Allah's wisdom is more profound than we can fathom. (R).

We did bestow on some Prophets more (and other) gifts than on others:

and We gave to David (the gift of) the Psalms.

C2241. The spiritual gifts with which the prophets came may themselves take different forms, according to the needs of the world and the times in which they lived, as judged by the wisdom of Allah.

A striking example here given is the gift of David over others.

David was given the Zabur, the Psalter or Psalms, intended to be for the worship of Allah and the celebration of Allah's praise.

For the Book of Psalms, see the last part of n. 669 to 4:163, where exactly the same words are used about David.

38. Surah Sad [88 verses]

Mecca Period 38

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَاذْكُرْ عِبَادَنَا إبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ...

38: 45. And commemorate Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

possessors of Power and Vision.

C4204. In the last Surah (37:83-113). Abraham and Isaac (and by implication Jacob) were mentioned as resisting Evil and winning through.

Here they are mentioned as men with spiritual power and vision. Israelite patriarchs, who bore witness to the Gospel of the Hereafter, and were therefore a blessing to their people, for they taught the Truth.

38: 46. Verily We did chose them for a special (purpose) --

proclaiming the Message of the Hereafter.

38: 47. They were, in Our sight, truly, of the company of the Elect and the Good.

Asad’s Version:

38:45 AND CALL to mind Our servants Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, [all of them] endowed with inner strength and vision:

(38:46) for, verily, We purified them by means of a thought most pure: the remembrance of the life to come. 42

(38:47) And, behold, in Our sight they were indeed among the elect, the truly good

Yuksel’s version:

The Elite

38:45 Recall Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They were resourceful, and with vision.

38:46 We had chosen them to enforce awareness of the Hereafter.

38:47 They are with Us of the elite, the best.
